Testing Services at CCC
Placement Testing
What is a placement test?
A placement test helps CCC determine which math and English courses are the right fit for your current skills. It is not a pass or fail exam and it does not affect your admission to CCC. It simply helps make sure you start in a class where you can succeed. CCC uses a placement test called the Accuplacer.
Do I need to take a placement test?
Not necessarily. Many students can place into math and English courses without taking a test at all. CCC uses a Multiple Measures approach, which means your high school GPA, recent grades in math or English, ACT or SAT scores, or transferable college coursework may be enough to determine your placement.
Some specialized programs also require placement testing regardless of your academic history.

Preparing for the Accuplacer
Taking a little time to prepare makes a real difference. These free resources are available to every CCC student:
- Free ACCUPLACER Practice Resources: Study guides and materials from CollegeBoard. CCC uses the WritePlacer test, so focus your English prep there.
- Mometrix eLibrary: Select “College Admissions and Placement” to find ACCUPLACER-specific guides. You will need your Comet ID and password to access Mometrix off campus.
Testing Fees
- First Accuplacer test: Free for first-time CCC students.
- Retesting: A $12 fee per subject applies. Pay online through Student Accounts, then email your receipt to testing.services@coconino.edu before your appointment can be confirmed.
Sending and Receiving Scores
Sending Scores to CCC
ACCUPLACER scores from another institution: Ask the originating institution to email an official copy directly to testing.services@coconino.edu. Student-submitted copies are not accepted.
ACT, SAT, CLEP, or AP scores: Request an official copy through the appropriate CollegeBoard website, or speak with an academic advisor. CCC's CollegeBoard code is 1712.

Need to send your CCC test scores to another institution? Complete the Test Score Release Form. Please not that scores cannot be sent to a private email address or directly to the student.

Do I have to take a placement test?

You may qualify using at least two of the following:
- High school GPA and your most recent grade in math or English
- ACT or SAT scores
- GED scores in Mathematical Reasoning or Reasoning Through Language Arts
- Accuplacer scores from another institution
- Completed college coursework with a grade of C or better in a prerequisite course
Important: If your high school information or test scores are more than 10 years old, different placement rules apply. Contact an advisor or Testing Services for guidance.

GED Prep classes run on a quarterly schedule with new sessions beginning throughout the year. You do not have to wait until fall to enroll. Contact the Adult Education office for current session start dates and registration deadlines.
Where are classes held?
Classes are available in multiple formats:
- In person at CCC’s Fourth Street Campus in Flagstaff and the CCC Page Center
- Virtual via Zoom for learners across Coconino County
- Online through independent study options for students who need maximum flexibility
What if my placement test scores are already high enough to pass the GED?
If your scores suggest you may be ready, you will discuss your results with an Adult Education team member during your goal-setting appointment. You may be eligible for a free GED Ready Practice Test, which measures your likelihood of passing the actual exam. Students who pass the GED Ready Practice Test are strongly encouraged to schedule their GED exam right away.
Is the GED exam itself free?
CCC offers opportunities to have the GED exam fully funded for eligible students. Ask your Adult Education advisor about exam funding options when you complete your registration.
What if I am under 18?
Students under 18 may enroll but must complete two additional steps before registering:
- Obtain a Withdrawal Form from the last public school you attended. If you were homeschooled, a parent or guardian must provide a letter confirming you are no longer enrolled.
- Complete a GED Parental Permission Form, which requires notarization.
What comes after earning my High School Equivalency Diploma?
Many students continue into college coursework at CCC, career training programs, or employment opportunities. Eligible students who complete the GED through CCC’s Adult Education program may qualify for a Tuition Assistance Grant to help cover the cost of their first college course.
