Disability Resources

A Letter of Accommodation (LOA) is the official document from Disability Resources that outlines a student’s approved accommodations.

• The LOA is the only document faculty should rely on for accommodation decisions
• It does not include specific disability information
• It reflects an individualized review and interactive process between the student and DR

Faculty are expected to:

• Review the Letter of Accommodation in a timely manner
• Implement approved accommodations as outlined
• Maintain student confidentiality
• Communicate with the student and DR if questions arise
• Provide accommodations as soon as reasonably possible after receiving the LOA

If you are unsure how to implement an accommodation, contact DR for guidance.

Faculty should not:

• Ask students to disclose their disability
• Request medical or personal documentation from students
• Deny or modify approved accommodations without consulting DR
• Delay implementation of accommodations unnecessarily

Students are responsible for sharing their Letter of Accommodation and initiating the use of their accommodations. Faculty are encouraged to:

• Create a welcoming and supportive environment
• Discuss how accommodations will be implemented privately — not during class
• Refer students to DR if additional support is needed

If a student has testing or classroom accommodations:

• Follow DR procedures for exam coordination when applicable
• Work with the student and DR to ensure accommodations are in place
• Contact DR with any concerns about implementation

You also have the right to file a complaint with external agencies, including:

• The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights (OCR)
• Other appropriate state or federal agencies

All disability-related information is confidential. Faculty should not:

• Share accommodation details with others
• Discuss a student’s accommodations publicly or in front of the class
